Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 29, from Rochdale, was sentenced to 20 months in prison at Manchester Crown Court on Monday after pleading guilty to three counts of assault by beating, including two against police officers and one against a member of the public at Manchester Airport.
Details of the Attacks
The court heard that on 14 February 2023, Amaaz was at Manchester Airport's Terminal 1 when he became involved in a dispute with a customer. The altercation escalated, and Amaaz punched the victim in the face, causing minor injuries. When police officers intervened, Amaaz turned on them, striking one officer in the chest and another in the face. The officers sustained bruising but did not require hospital treatment.
Sentencing and Impact
Sentencing Amaaz, Judge Timothy Smith said: "This was a sustained and unprovoked attack on both a member of the public and the police officers who were simply doing their duty. Such violence will not be tolerated." The judge also imposed a restraining order preventing Amaaz from contacting the victims for five years. Greater Manchester Police welcomed the sentence, with Detective Constable Sarah Jones stating: "This sentence sends a clear message that assaults on emergency workers are unacceptable and will be met with the full force of the law."
