Man jailed over 20-year-old murder cover-up after airport arrest
Man jailed over murder cover-up 20 years on

Faiser Hussain, 44, has been jailed for four years after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice in connection with a shooting murder that took place 20 years ago. Hussain was arrested at Manchester Airport earlier this year after re-entering the UK and was subsequently charged with murder.

Murder of Ibrahim Ilyas

Ibrahim Ilyas, 20, was shot dead as he sat in a car on Abbeyfield Road in Pitsmoor, Sheffield, in June 2006. Police described the killing as a 'shocking and ruthless crime'. Hussain's role involved the disposal of a stolen Volvo car used in the drive-by shooting, which was found abandoned and burnt out on Psalters Lane in Rotherham following the incident.

At Hull Crown Court, Hussain pleaded guilty to committing an act or series of acts with intent to pervert the course of public justice. After the guilty plea was accepted, he was found not guilty of murder and two counts of attempted murder following a direction from the judge to the jury. He was jailed on Thursday.

Police Statement and Investigation

South Yorkshire Police said in a statement: "Over 20 years after Ibrahim Ilyas was fatally shot as he sat in a car on Abbeyfield Road in Pitsmoor, Faiser Hussain has been brought to justice for the role he played in attempting to cover-up the killing. The charge relates to the disposal of the vehicle used in the drive-by shooting, which was found abandoned and burnt out on Psalters Lane in Rotherham following the incident."

Mohammed Ali was convicted of murder in 2006 and subsequently jailed for life, with a minimum term of 30 years.

Detective's Remarks

Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Woodward, the senior investigating officer in the case, said Hussain 'played an integral part in the planned attempt to conceal potentially vital evidence'. He said: "Ibrahim had his life cut short in the most devastating of circumstances, leaving his loved ones living every day with a grief they did not deserve. Ibrahim's family have shown immense courage having to re-live the painful and traumatic events surrounding his death. Hussain played an integral part in the planned attempt to conceal potentially vital evidence of a shocking and ruthless crime and after 20 years he probably thought he had got away with it. I hope this serves as a reminder to anyone who believes they can evade justice that eventually your criminal behaviour will catch up with you."
