Man jailed for running over girlfriend in Swansea

A man has been jailed for 26 months after deliberately running over his girlfriend with his car in Swansea, breaking her leg in two places. Levi Edwards, 33, of Elphin Crescent, Townhill, Swansea, admitted dangerous driving and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Concert argument led to attack

The incident happened on August 27 after the couple attended a concert at Swansea Arena. An argument began when the woman wanted to leave early after spilling wine on herself. Edwards returned to their car to drive home, but his partner decided to walk, and the argument continued as he drove slowly alongside her.

During the argument, the woman hit the car's headlight. Edwards then mounted the pavement and struck her with the vehicle, forcing her against a concrete bollard and knocking her to the ground. An eyewitness heard the couple shouting, saw the collision, and called the police.

Hospital treatment and arrest

Before officers arrived, Edwards drove his partner to hospital, where medics found fractures—including an open fracture—to the tibia and fibula in her left leg. She required surgery to fit metal plates and screws and spent a week in hospital. Edwards was arrested at the hospital and answered "no comment" to all questions in interview.

The court heard Edwards was out of prison on licence at the time for his role in an organised crime group supplying drugs across south Wales via the Telegram messaging app. He has 10 previous convictions for 18 offences, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm in 2013 and battery in 2014.

Sentencing and driving ban

Andrew Evans, defending, said Edwards immediately realised the seriousness of his partner's injuries and drove her to hospital, where CCTV showed him carrying her into A&E. He added: "He bitterly regrets his momentary misjudgement and momentary loss of control which resulted in serious injuries to the mother of his children, someone he loves."

Recorder Paul Lewis KC said the background was an argument during a night out and that driving over the pavement into contact with his partner was a highly dangerous manoeuvre. He noted a letter from the victim speaking "in glowing terms" of Edwards's relationship with their children.

With one-third discounts for guilty pleas, Edwards received 12 months for dangerous driving and 26 months for GBH, to run concurrently. He was also banned from driving for 27 months and must pass an extended test before regaining his licence.
