A man has been jailed for six years and eight months after a 79-year-old man died following an altercation at a bus stop in Garforth. Thomas Childe, 24, of Oak Crescent, Garforth, was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Friday, October 23, after pleading guilty to manslaughter at an earlier hearing.
Incident in Aberford Road
Childe was arrested following an incident in Aberford Road, Garforth, on October 29 last year, when he pushed Colin Starbuck to the floor after a verbal altercation. Mr Starbuck was given emergency treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that day.
Investigation findings
An investigation into his death found that he had suffered a heart attack. Detectives established a causal link between the heart attack and the altercation with Childe, who was identified from CCTV footage. He was initially charged with murder before the case resulted in a manslaughter conviction.
Police statement
Detective Superintendent Matt Holdsworth, the senior investigating officer, said: "The thorough investigation conducted by our officers was able to prove that Childe was responsible for causing the needless death of Mr Starbuck, whose family are still coming to terms with their sudden loss.
"I hope today's outcome will give them some comfort as they try to move forwards with their lives."
