Robert Evans Jr, a 25-year-old man extradited from Scotland to Canada, has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for the manslaughter of restaurant owner Sharif Rahman. The fatal incident occurred on August 17, 2023, outside The Curry House in Owen Sound, Ontario, following a dispute over an unpaid bill of $145.43 Canadian dollars.
Fatal Confrontation
Court proceedings revealed that Evans Jr, originally from Manchester, had been dining with his father Robert Evans Sr and uncle Barry Evans at the restaurant. After Evans Jr stepped outside for a cigarette, his companions left without settling the bill. Rahman confronted Evans Jr outside, demanding payment. During the altercation, Rahman pushed Evans Jr twice and held him to prevent his departure. Evans Jr then punched Rahman once in the face, causing him to fall backward and strike his head on the pavement. Rahman suffered critical injuries and died in hospital a week later.
Extradition and Sentencing
Following the attack, Evans Jr fled the scene. Police launched a homicide investigation, releasing CCTV footage of the suspects. Nearly a year later, on July 30, 2024, Evans Jr and his father were arrested in Edinburgh on international warrants. Barry Evans was arrested in Dalkeith on October 29, 2024. All three were held in custody and consented to extradition, returning to Canada in December 2025. On June 5, 2026, Evans Jr pleaded guilty to manslaughter at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound. He was sentenced to 42 months imprisonment, with credit for time served, leaving seven months remaining before deportation to the UK.
Accomplices Sentenced
Robert Evans Sr and Barry Evans pleaded guilty to being accessories to the crime. They received sentences equivalent to time already served and have since been deported from Canada, according to the BBC. The case highlights the severe consequences of a single punch and the reach of international law enforcement cooperation.
