A man has been prosecuted after a Ring doorbell camera captured him urinating outside a house in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Charles May, 49, was sentenced to 60 hours of unpaid work and ordered to abstain from alcohol for 120 days following the incident.
Details of the Offence
May was charged with criminal damage to the house and indecent exposure on April 11 last year. He pleaded guilty to both counts at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court in September, where magistrates also ordered him to pay £300 in compensation.
The defendant, from Aylesbury, was caught on a Ring doorbell exposing and relieving himself at the front door of a property.
Digital Evidence in Policing
Thames Valley Police highlighted the case as an example of digital evidence being submitted from across the force area. The force uses a system run by NiCE Investigate, with shared setup costs with Hampshire, Sussex, and Surrey Police. Residents are urged to register their cameras and CCTV systems to help solve crimes more quickly.
Registration is voluntary, and camera owners retain control over what footage they share with police via links sent by investigators.
A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: "In this case, footage from a Ring doorbell camera was instrumental in securing a conviction. Registering your CCTV or video doorbell with Thames Valley Police through NICE can help officers quickly identify and access footage that may be vital in investigations. It's a simple way to support policing efforts and help keep your neighbourhood safe."
