Irishman Sentenced for Murder of US Tourist in Budapest

An Irish national has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for the murder of 31-year-old American tourist Mackenzie 'Kenzie' Michalski, whom he lured from a Budapest nightclub before killing her during an intimate encounter. The verdict was delivered Thursday at Budapest's Metropolitan Court, where the killer, identified only as LTM, was found guilty of murder and given a 14-year sentence without the possibility of parole. The 18 months he has already served in detention will count toward his sentence, and the court ordered his deportation from Hungary upon release. He must also pay 2.5 million forints (£6,000) in court costs. His attorney has appealed the verdict.

Nightclub Encounter and Fatal Attack

Mackenzie Michalski, from Portland, Oregon, was reported missing on November 5, 2024. Police reviewed CCTV footage from nearby nightclubs and spotted her leaving multiple venues with the man who would later be identified as her killer. Investigators determined that Michalski and LTM met at a nightclub, danced together, and then left for his rented apartment. During an intimate encounter, he beat and strangled her. After her death, LTM scrubbed his apartment, stuffed her body into a wardrobe, then purchased a suitcase and transferred her remains into it.

Disposal of the Body and Internet Searches

LTM rented a car and drove approximately 90 miles (145 kilometers) southwest of Budapest to Lake Balaton, where he dumped the suitcase in woodland near the town of Szigliget. Police later released footage of him leading officers to the spot where he abandoned the body. Detectives examined his internet history and found searches on how to dispose of a corpse, police procedures in missing-person cases, whether pigs consume human remains, and the prevalence of wild boar around Lake Balaton. He also queried the competence of Budapest's police force online.

Arrest and Confession

LTM was arrested on November 7, 2024, after police identified him through CCTV footage. He initially insisted that Michalski's death was accidental, but investigators noted he went to considerable lengths to conceal the killing. The court rejected his defense and handed down the 14-year sentence. The case has drawn attention to the dangers faced by tourists in nightlife settings and the efforts of Hungarian authorities to bring perpetrators to justice.
