A Cardiff man who raped a woman on two occasions and later offered £3,000 to steal her phone has been jailed for 17 years. Mousa Alsharki, 49, of Claude Road, Roath, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday after being found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of perverting the course of justice.
Details of the offences
The court heard that Alsharki forced his victim onto a mattress and orally raped her. He later raped her vaginally after groping her and pulling her hair. The victim reported the rapes to the police in October 2025, and Alsharki was arrested but denied the offences. He was released under investigation.
On October 30, 2025, Alsharki met with a man in a restaurant and asked him to obtain the victim's phone, as he was concerned there would be "incriminating material" on it. Prosecutor Dan Jones said the defendant offered the man £3,000, but his request was turned down, and he was subsequently rearrested.
Victim's statement
In a victim personal statement read to the court by Mr Jones, the victim said: "He has caused grave and ongoing harm by his actions. This crime continues to haunt my life... What happened was the turning point which completely shattered my sense of security. Nowhere is safe anymore, neither inside my home or outside."
She added: "I live in constant fear the perpetrator will appear or I will be harmed. This fear is not a temporary feeling but a daily reality I experience every moment. No aspect of my life has been unaffected. I suffer from sleep disturbance, recurring nightmares, and constant panic. I live in a state of anxiety and terror as if the danger is still present. I remain under medical supervision with little improvement... My ability to live a normal life has been severely damaged – even simple daily activities became psychological burdens. I can no longer work steadily or participate in society as I once did. I became almost completely isolated which has deteriorated my mental health."
She concluded: "It has destroyed any chance of rebuilding my life or finding a partner again."
Sentencing
The court heard that Alsharki has two previous convictions for offences including battery, criminal damage, and breaching restraining orders. In mitigation, Matthew Comer said his client has received references from his son, nephew, and wife. The barrister said the defendant came to the UK from Syria as a refugee and has five children.
Sentencing, Judge Shomon Khan said: "You showed controlling, manipulative, and degrading behaviour towards your victim." The judge said he was satisfied the defendant was a "dangerous offender" and would pass an extended prison sentence. Alsharki was sentenced to 17 years imprisonment with an extended licence period of three years. He was also made subject to sex offender notification requirements indefinitely.
