Former Teacher Receives Life Sentence for Antifreeze Murder

A former Massachusetts teacher has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the premeditated murder of her boyfriend, whom she poisoned with antifreeze in a sports drink. The lethal act was motivated by intense jealousy stemming from his involvement with another woman.

Details of the Fatal Poisoning

Judy Church, 67, from Salisbury, was convicted of first-degree murder for administering a fatal dose of ethylene glycol to 55-year-old Leroy Fowler on the evening of November 11, 2022. According to the Essex County District Attorney's Office, Church laced a Powerade bottle with the toxic substance, which Fowler consumed.

Prosecutor AJ Camelio emphasized the deliberate nature of the crime in court, declaring the poisoned drink as the murder weapon. He noted that Church was the sole individual with access to Fowler during the critical period when the antifreeze would have taken effect.

Toxic Relationship and Jealous Motive

Investigations revealed that Church and Fowler were engaged in what authorities described as a toxic and dysfunctional relationship. Fowler's son disclosed that his father maintained a second girlfriend despite cohabiting with Church for several years. This romantic entanglement was identified as the primary catalyst behind Church's deadly scheme.

Prosecutors highlighted Church's resentment, mentioning that she had even crafted a voodoo doll representing the other woman, illustrating her deep-seated animosity. The district attorney's office press release quoted Camelio stating, Neither woman was happy with it, as evidenced, in part, by the defendant having created a voodoo doll of the other woman.

Discovery and Investigation

The crime came to light when Church placed a 911 call shortly after 8 p.m. on the night of the poisoning, reporting that Fowler must have ingested something, was unable to stand, and was experiencing a bloody nose while tearing apart the bedroom. Fowler was rushed to the hospital, where medical professionals determined that antifreeze had caused severe organ damage, leading to his death two days later.

Police conducted a search of Church's residence in the small beach town, uncovering antifreeze residue in a Powerade bottle and locating a bottle of orange de-icer nearby. Additionally, authorities found 13 videos on Church's cell phone that captured Fowler in agonizing distress after ingesting the chemical. Notably, she only contacted emergency services after he explicitly requested her to do so.

One particularly disturbing video shown to the jury depicted Church recording Fowler in pain while she callously inquired, Are you having fun?

Prior Suspicions and Interrogation

Court records and affidavits revealed that Fowler had expressed concerns to family members about possibly being poisoned by Church through a coffee shake she frequently prepared for him. His stepson, Michael Hawkins, mentioned that Fowler had suggested out of the blue just two weeks prior that Church might be poisoning him, though his sister Tammy Carbone initially dismissed it as a joke.

Fowler also reportedly told his stepson that he felt better when away from Church's home but depended on her for most of his meals. During police interrogation following her arrest, Church admitted to being in a relationship with Fowler since 2012 and demonstrated familiarity with medical terminology related to his condition. When questioned about her knowledge, she attributed it to frequent internet searches on Google.

Regarding allegations from Fowler's family about the poisoning, Church insisted that she and Fowler used to watch true crime documentaries together and that she had merely joked about poisoning him in the past.

Sentencing and Judicial Remarks

On Monday, the retired teacher received a life sentence without parole for first-degree murder. The presiding judge underscored the premeditation and extreme atrocity and cruelty involved in the crime, affirming the severity of the punishment for this calculated and malicious act of jealousy-driven violence.
