Police are continuing to investigate a recent fire at the former Royal Alexandra Infirmary (RAI) in Paisley, which is believed to have been deliberately set. Emergency services were called to the deserted B-listed building in Calside on Sunday, June 28, after a blaze broke out. Firefighters brought the fire under control, and no injuries were reported, but enquiries remain ongoing.
Local Concerns and Security Calls
Councillor Eddie Devine, who represents Paisley Southeast, was at the scene as the flames were extinguished. He said he was inundated with messages from worried neighbours in the days following the fire. "People that live near there are obviously anxious about it. It was incredibly scary for them," he added, hoping for progress as "quickly as possible."
The heritage treasure, located between Calside and Neilston Road, has been a long-running source of anguish for residents after becoming a target for vandals and ghost hunters. It was previously ravaged by a fire in 2022.
Redevelopment Plans at Risk
In May 2024, the site appeared to have landed a major lifeline when Renfrewshire Council granted permissions for a multi-million-pound redevelopment into flats. However, it remains unclear whether that vision will be realized. Councillor Devine stressed the need for strengthened security measures, stating: "We're all hoping something is going to be done. It's been highlighted now and some sort of action is needed, rather than people just talking about it. They need to make sure the site is secure but it also needs to be something substantial when it comes to strengthening the security." He suggested CCTV or a physical presence, and noted that windows on different floors need attention.
Police Update
When asked for an update on Thursday, Police Scotland said enquiries are ongoing. The force previously disclosed the fire was being treated as "wilful."
