Police Not Seeking Other Suspects in Widdecombe Murder

Police investigating the alleged murder of former MP and MEP Ann Widdecombe have confirmed they are not seeking any other suspects after arresting a 28-year-old man. The suspect, a white British male, was taken into custody in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, shortly after 9pm on Saturday, on suspicion of murder.

Details of the Incident

Ann Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor at approximately 11:40am on Thursday, having sustained serious injuries. Police believe she was attacked on Wednesday at around 12:30pm. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman of Devon and Cornwall Police stated on Sunday: “At this point, there is still no information to suggest that this is a terrorism-related incident and at this point we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this murder.” He added that there is “nothing to suggest that it was politically motivated.”

Investigation and Public Reassurance

Detectives remain open-minded about the potential motive, but Longman stressed there is no believed threat to the wider public. He urged the public not to engage with online speculation, calling it “unhelpful” and “distressing to the family and friends of Miss Widdecombe.” Chief Constable James Vaughan praised the force’s “extraordinary response,” noting that the operation has “been running at a lightning pace for 48 hours” and that “British policing at its very best” led to a suspect being in custody.

Tributes and Security Measures

Widdecombe’s personal driver of 10 years, Peter Horrell, laid flowers at her home and said she “never mentioned any fear” for her safety. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage visited the village to pay tribute, stating the party had checked emails for abuse patterns but found none. Following her death, Reform UK MPs are reportedly receiving 24-hour security protection. ITV News reported that Widdecombe stopped responding to WhatsApp messages from a TV producer around the time of the alleged attack.
