Devon and Cornwall Police have defended their decision not to release CCTV footage or suspect descriptions in the murder investigation of former minister Ann Widdecombe, citing operational necessity. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated that releasing such information prematurely could compromise ongoing enquiries and prejudice future investigative opportunities.
Police Provide Update on Investigation Progress
In a press conference in Exeter, ACC Longman confirmed that officers are making progress and pursuing multiple lines of enquiry. He thanked the local community for coming forward with information and urged the public to refrain from speculation on social media. Longman emphasized that the decision to withhold material, including potential suspect descriptions and CCTV, was made on an operational basis and that information will be released when appropriate and necessary.
Details of the Incident
Ann Widdecombe, 78, a former Conservative minister and prominent Reform UK campaigner, was found dead at her home in Haytor Vale on the edge of Dartmoor on Thursday morning. Police believe she was attacked at around 12.30pm the previous day, shortly after completing a morning media appearance and while due to join another broadcast. She sustained serious injuries. Floral tributes, including a wreath from Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, have been placed near her home.
Arrest and Ruled-Out Motives
A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after the investigation was upgraded but has since been released without charge and is no longer part of the inquiry. Police have ruled out terrorism and stated there is no information suggesting a political motive, though they remain open-minded. The force’s cautious approach comes amid intense public and media interest in the high-profile case.
Appeal for Information
ACC Longman appealed directly to the public: “I would ask the public again, please do not speculate on social media. If you have any relevant information and have not yet reported, please do so via the major incident public portal.” He added: “Our thoughts remain with Ann Widdecombe’s family and friends at this sad time. They continue to be supported by specialist officers. We will provide updates as and when we are able to and thank you for your patience.” Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses and urge anyone with information, however minor, to come forward. The investigation remains active with significant resources deployed.
