Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has been jailed for over five years after admitting to embezzling more than £400,000 from the party. The 61-year-old, who is the estranged husband of former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh last month and was sentenced today.
Details of the embezzlement
Murrell’s theft spanned twelve years, from 2010 to 2022, during which he used the stolen funds to purchase luxury goods, cosmetics, cars, and a motorhome. He served as SNP chief executive for over two decades before his arrest.
Court proceedings and sentence
The judge handed down a custodial sentence of over five years at the High Court in Edinburgh. Murrell had previously admitted to the charges, which involved the systematic misappropriation of party funds for personal gain.
Impact on the SNP
The scandal has dealt a significant blow to the Scottish National Party, already reeling from a police investigation into its finances. Murrell’s actions have raised questions about oversight and governance within the party.
