A person has died and a child is fighting for their life after a train collided with a car at a level crossing in Lancashire on Thursday morning. The incident occurred at the Station Road level crossing in Hoghton just before 9am on June 25.
Details of the Incident
Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 8:50am. Two people were in the car; one was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other, a child, was taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital with life-threatening injuries. No injuries were reported among passengers on the train.
A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said: “We are currently on scene at a level crossing in Hoghton, Lancashire, following reports at 8.50am today (June 25) that a train had struck a car. Paramedics and the fire service are also in attendance. Two people were in the car and sadly one was pronounced dead at the scene, the other is being taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. There have been no other injuries reported from passengers on the train at this time.”
Emergency Response
The North West Ambulance Service deployed multiple teams, including a hazardous area response team and two air ambulances. A spokesperson said: “We responded to an incident in the Hoghton area of Lancashire after reports of a collision between a train and a car at 8.50am today (June 25). Several clinical teams attended the scene, including our hazardous area response team and two air ambulances. No passengers travelling on the train required treatment from ambulance crews. Sadly, a child has sustained life-threatening injuries and has been taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for further treatment.”
South Ribble Police assisted at the scene and advised motorists to avoid the area. An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Train Disruptions
Northern Rail reported that services between Preston and Blackburn are disrupted, with trains unable to run in either direction. Routes affected include Preston to Colne and Blackpool North to York. Ticket restrictions have been lifted, and replacement buses are operating. Passengers delayed by 15 minutes or more can claim compensation.
