A California mother has been handed a prison sentence of 15 years to life after her one-year-old son tragically died from being left in a scorching hot vehicle. Maya Hernandez, aged 20, entered a plea of no contest to involuntary manslaughter charges in connection with the death of Amillio Gutierrez on June 29, 2025.

Prosecutors detailed that Hernandez left Amillio and his two-year-old brother locked inside her parked car for approximately two and a half hours. During this time, she attended a medical spa in Bakersfield to undergo lip filler injections. Temperatures in the area soared to a blistering 101 degrees Fahrenheit on that fateful day.

Hernandez asserted that she believed the children were safe because the air conditioning was operational when she departed. However, her hybrid vehicle's engine automatically shut off after one hour, leaving the boys without any cooling for at least 90 minutes. This critical failure resulted in Amillio's body temperature escalating to a lethal 107 degrees before he succumbed to the extreme heat.
