Mother Found Guilty of Murdering Infant Daughter with Severe Injuries

A mother has been convicted of murdering her two-month-old daughter, who sustained catastrophic injuries including skull fractures, brain bleeding, and multiple broken bones. Zara Arsalan, aged 31, was found guilty on Friday at Coventry Crown Court for the murder of her baby Harleen in 2020.

Tragic Discovery and Medical Evidence

Paramedics responded to a distress call reporting that the infant had fallen from her mother's lap. Upon arrival at the family home in West Bromwich, they discovered Harleen with a severe head injury and struggling to breathe. The baby was rushed to hospital but tragically passed away the following day.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Harleen likely suffered from being struck or forcefully hit against a hard object. Additionally, medical evidence indicated she had been shaken vigorously by her mother. The infant endured skull fractures, bleeding on the brain, fractured ribs, and a broken collarbone.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Arsalan was arrested and subsequently charged with Harleen's murder. Throughout the trial, she denied killing her daughter, but the court found her guilty based on overwhelming evidence. She is scheduled to be sentenced on March 12.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Poole commented on the case, stating, 'This is an incredibly tragic case. Harleen was only two months old when she died at the hands of the person who should have been doing everything to keep her safe.'

He added, 'Arsalan has never taken responsibility for her actions. Instead, she has repeatedly lied about what happened to Harleen despite being shown evidence that rejects her claims.'

Investigation and Justice

DCI Poole expressed gratitude towards the investigating officers, acknowledging their dedication and emotional investment in the case. 'I want to thank all of the officers involved as I know they were deeply affected by this investigation. They have worked incredibly hard to get justice for Harleen and her family,' he said.

The conviction underscores the severe consequences of child abuse and the rigorous efforts of law enforcement to secure justice for vulnerable victims. The case has drawn significant attention to infant safety and parental accountability within the criminal justice system.
