Jordan Gregory, 23, struck Owen Harvey with a beer bottle outside the Baruc Arms pub in Barry on July 15 last year, after Harvey threatened to harm Gregory's daughter. The attack occurred when Harvey was asked to leave the pub; Gregory hit him with the bottle and punched him repeatedly until a bystander intervened. The bottle did not break, and Harvey sustained only minor injuries.
Police Chase and Drug Possession
On September 10, Gregory was driving a BMW in St Brides Way, Barry, when police attempted to stop him for driving without insurance. He refused to stop, reaching speeds of 42mph in a 20mph zone, and mounted a kerb in Tennyson Road. He then drove at 50mph in Winston Road, 80mph in a 30mph zone on Colcot Road, and on the wrong side of College Road before turning into a dead end on Glyndwr Road, where he was detained.
Gregory appeared intoxicated and told officers he was an alcoholic. When asked if he had any illicit items, he said, 'Yeah, drugs for f***'s sake' and threw a plastic bag containing cocaine and cannabis to the floor. He also had a knuckleduster. At the police station, his breath alcohol reading was 126 micrograms per 100ml, over three times the legal limit of 35 micrograms.
Court Proceedings and Sentence
Gregory, of Holton Road, Barry, pleaded guilty to attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of Class A and B drugs. He had five prior convictions, including battery. At Cardiff Crown Court, Judge Shomon Khan sentenced him to 34 months in prison, suspended for 36 months, with a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement, a 90-day alcohol abstinence monitoring requirement, and a 24-month driving ban.
