Federal Judge Dismisses Bulk of Blake Lively's Claims in Justin Baldoni Lawsuit
A federal judge has significantly narrowed the scope of the legal battle between actress Blake Lively and her co-star and director Justin Baldoni. In a ruling delivered on Thursday, Judge Lewis Liman dismissed 10 of the 13 claims originally filed by Lively in her lawsuit against Baldoni.
Claims Thrown Out and Those Proceeding to Trial
Among the claims dismissed were serious allegations of sexual harassment, conspiracy, and defamation. This leaves just three claims that will now proceed to a trial scheduled for May, following unsuccessful mediation last month. The surviving claims focus on breach of contract, retaliation, and aiding and abetting in retaliation.
Lively's legal team has argued that Baldoni orchestrated a retaliatory campaign against her, involving the sharing and amplification of negative stories online to damage her reputation. This aspect remains central to the case moving forward.
Legal Reasoning and Statements from Counsel
Sigrid McCawley, an attorney representing Blake Lively, issued a statement clarifying the dismissal of the sexual harassment claims. She explained that the court's decision was based on Lively's classification as an independent contractor rather than an employee, not on the merits of the allegations themselves.
"This case has always been and will remain focused on the devastating retaliation and the extraordinary steps the defendants took to destroy Blake Lively's reputation because she stood up for safety on the set," McCawley stated. "For Blake Lively, the greatest measure of justice is that the people and the playbook behind these coordinated digital attacks have been exposed and are already being held accountable by other women they've targeted."
The lawsuit had previously detailed allegations that Baldoni was "consistently inappropriate" with Lively during the filming of the 2024 film It Ends With Us, an adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel. Lively accused him of unwanted physical contact and making comments about her appearance and weight.
Background of the Legal Dispute and Its Impact
The legal feud has cast a shadow over the success of It Ends With Us, which was a global box office hit, grossing over $350 million upon its 2024 release. The conflict between the two stars has been protracted and public, with both sides filing substantial claims.
In a notable development last June, Judge Liman also dismissed a $400 million defamation counterclaim that Justin Baldoni had filed against Blake Lively and her husband, actor Ryan Reynolds. Lively had previously withdrawn two claims of emotional distress against Baldoni in the same month.
The case has inadvertently revealed private communications, including text messages between Lively and other celebrities like Taylor Swift and Ben Affleck. In these unsealed messages, Lively referred to Baldoni as the "doofus director of my movie" and sought Swift's input on screenplay rewrites.
Entertainment industry observers have noted the damaging nature of the prolonged litigation. Former entertainment lawyer and Puck reporter Matthew Belloni commented last year, "This doesn't help either of them. The longer this goes on and the more mud that's slung at each other, it really hurts both of them."
With the case now streamlined, the trial is poised to address the core issues of contractual disputes and alleged retaliation, setting the stage for a pivotal legal showdown in the coming months.
