Boxer Faces Assault Charge After Petrol Station Altercation
Former world champion boxer Joe Cordina has been charged with assault following an incident at a petrol station in Cardiff. The 33-year-old, who held the IBF super-featherweight title, is accused of assaulting a man during the altercation on 24 May.
South Wales Police confirmed that Cordina has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He is scheduled to appear at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on 23 July.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred at a petrol station in the Llandaff area of Cardiff. Police were called to the scene at around 7pm following reports of an assault. A man in his 30s sustained minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment.
Cordina, from Cardiff, was arrested at the scene and later released on bail pending further investigation. The charge follows a review of evidence, including CCTV footage from the petrol station.
Cordina's Boxing Career
Joe Cordina is a former professional boxer who won the IBF super-featherweight title in 2022. He successfully defended his title once before losing it to Anthony Cacace in May 2024. Cordina has a professional record of 17 wins and 1 loss, with 9 wins coming by way of knockout.
He represented Wales at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, reaching the quarterfinals. Cordina turned professional in 2017 and quickly rose through the ranks, capturing the British and Commonwealth titles before his world title triumph.
Legal Proceedings
Cordina's legal team has not yet commented on the charge. The boxer is expected to enter a plea at his court appearance next month. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
