ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan Faces Disciplinary Charges Over Sexual Harassment Claims
ICC Prosecutor Faces Disciplinary Charges Over Harassment Claims

Karim Khan KC, the British chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC), is now confronting formal disciplinary charges over allegations of sexual harassment made by a female colleague. The 56-year-old prosecutor, who previously sought arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, faces these proceedings after members of the ICC's oversight body voted to move forward with the case.

Allegations and Investigation

The claims first surfaced in 2024, when a former female aide accused Mr Khan of misconduct, including allegations of non-consensual sexual acts during official trips to locations such as New York, Colombia, Chad, and Paris over an 11-month period. She described enduring a 'constant onslaught' of sexual advances and pressure to engage in sexual activity. In response, an investigation was launched, and Mr Khan took a leave of absence from his role at the court.

Disciplinary Proceedings Vote

Recently, the ICC's supervisory body voted 15 in favour of bringing disciplinary proceedings against Mr Khan, with two abstentions and four votes against. This decision came despite advice from an investigatory panel of judges, which had reportedly reached a 'unanimous and unequivocal conclusion' that no misconduct had occurred. Mr Khan's lawyers have expressed alarm at this development, noting that he was not directly informed of the decision and that it contradicts the judicial panel's findings.

Denials and Further Allegations

Mr Khan has consistently denied all allegations through his legal representatives, stating it is 'categorically untrue that he has engaged in sexual misconduct of any kind'. In August of last year, a second woman came forward with accusations of sexual misconduct, adding to the scrutiny. The case has raised significant concerns about the ICC's internal processes and handling of such sensitive matters.

Context of Netanyahu Arrest Warrants

Notably, in May 2024, just two weeks after the initial harassment allegations were made, Mr Khan controversially sought arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant. This move has added a layer of complexity to the disciplinary proceedings, intertwining high-profile international legal actions with personal misconduct claims.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Mr Khan's representatives for comment, but as of now, the disciplinary process moves forward, marking a critical juncture for the ICC and its commitment to accountability and justice within its own ranks.
