Texas Holiday Ends in Tragedy as Father Shoots Daughter After Political Argument
A British woman was fatally shot by her own father during a family holiday in Texas following a heated argument about former US President Donald Trump, a coroner's inquest has heard in distressing detail. Lucy Harrison, aged 23 from Warrington, died from a gunshot wound to the chest at her father's detached property in the small town of Prosper, Texas, on January 10.
Chilling Sequence of Events on a Snowy Day
Lucy had been visiting her father Kris Harrison's American residence with her boyfriend Sam Littler since December 28. The couple had recently purchased their first home together in Warrington and had hosted family for Christmas just days before their international trip. On the day of the tragedy, heavy snowfall had blanketed the area, with Lucy playing outdoors with her two younger half-sisters earlier in the day.
According to testimony presented at Cheshire Coroners Court in Warrington, a significant argument erupted that morning between father and daughter. Sam Littler described how the dispute occurred "during the time Trump had been inaugurated" and led to Lucy becoming upset and running upstairs. After consoling her, the couple returned outside before preparing for their scheduled 3pm departure to the airport.
The Fatal Moments and Immediate Aftermath
Sam Littler provided harrowing testimony about the moments leading to the shooting. He described being seated on a sofa with the children while Heather Harrison (Kris's wife) was at the breakfast table. Mr Harrison then led Lucy by the hand into his bedroom, located just 10-15 paces from where they were sitting.
"The only thing I heard was a loud bang 15 seconds after he took her by the hand," Sam told the court. Initially thinking it might be a joke given Mr Harrison's "jovial" nature, he quickly realized the seriousness when he heard screams of "Heather."
Upon entering the room, Sam found Lucy on the floor near the bathroom entrance while Kris Harrison was screaming "I don't know, I don't know, call 911." Sam immediately dialed emergency services while Heather Harrison administered CPR, but Lucy could not be saved.
Family Concerns About Guns and Alcohol
The inquest revealed troubling background information about the family dynamics. A statement from family friend Ella Gowing disclosed that Lucy had expressed serious concerns about her father possessing a handgun in the household. "She was concerned for her younger siblings, she did not want them to be around something so dangerous," the statement noted.
Lucy's mother Jane Coates confirmed her daughter's anti-gun stance during her testimony, stating: "Lucy was anti-guns, guns are not our culture and she did not like him having a gun in the house." Jane also revealed that Lucy had texted her just 15 minutes before the shooting to say she was packed and ready to return to the UK.
Senior coroner Jacqueline Devonish disclosed that Mr Harrison had previously deceived police about his alcohol consumption, only admitting during the inquest that he had been drinking on the day of the incident. The court heard evidence about Mr Harrison's history of alcoholism, including a previous alcoholic seizure that resulted in him being placed in an induced coma.
Legal Outcome and Emotional Tributes
Despite the shooting occurring at "medium range" with five witnesses present in the house, a Texas grand jury determined in June last year that no one would face prosecution over Lucy's death. Grand juries in Texas comprise 12 individuals who examine evidence in private to determine whether probable cause exists to believe a felony was committed.
During emotional testimony, Lucy's mother Jane Coates struggled to describe her daughter, saying: "To capture the essence of her you had to see her to believe her - she was a force of life, sensitive, energetic, intelligent, funny and a really great human being." She added that Lucy was "full of energy and life, and she was bold and brave" with remarkable emotional intelligence.
The inquest continues to examine the full circumstances surrounding this tragic international incident that has left a British family devastated and raised questions about gun ownership, family dynamics, and cross-cultural differences in firearm attitudes.
