Graham Linehan, the creator of the Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted, has been awarded £25,000 in compensation from the Metropolitan Police following his arrest at Heathrow Airport in September 2025. The arrest, made on suspicion of inciting violence, stemmed from complaints about three gender-critical posts Linehan shared on X (formerly Twitter) in 2024. Scotland Yard acknowledged shortcomings in the investigation, arrest, and imposition of bail conditions, issuing an apology.
Arrest and Detention Details
Linehan was detained upon returning from Arizona and questioned about the posts. During his detention, he suffered high blood pressure and required hospital treatment. He was later released but placed under restrictive bail conditions, including a temporary ban from X. The Free Speech Union supported Linehan in launching legal action against the Met, citing wrongful arrest and breach of free speech.
Police Apology and Compensation
In May 2026, the Met issued an unreserved apology to Linehan. This week, they repeated the apology and agreed to pay £25,000 compensation. A senior officer stated in a letter, seen by The Telegraph: 'Whilst there can be no doubt that all officers acted in good faith throughout and were seeking to do their best in the circumstances, the investigation identified shortcomings in both the investigation, arrest and imposition of bail conditions.' The letter added: 'We apologise to you for those shortcomings and for the distress and inconvenience which he suffered as a result.'
Impact on Policing Policy
A Met Police spokesperson told the Mirror: 'We recognise the considerable distress caused to Mr Linehan, and have offered our sincere apologies. This case prompted a significant change, which means the Met no longer investigates non-crime hate incidents. We believe this will provide clearer direction for officers, reduce ambiguity and enable them to focus on matters that meet the threshold for criminal investigations.' On October 20, Linehan was informed that no further action would be taken.
Linehan's Current Situation
Linehan now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he hopes to restore his TV career. He told podcast host Joe Rogan that he has a three-year visa and aims to secure a permanent green card. 'Rob Schneider has shown me incredible kindness and brought me over to work on a few projects... My visa's three years, and my aim is to make myself so useful to the Americans that they won't let me go!' he said. Linehan described the compensation as beneficial, having been 'on his uppers' in recent years.
