Andrew Butler, then 47, was found by his seven-year-old stepson in 2007 engaging in an intimate act with his biological daughter, Nicola Yates. The young boy immediately informed his mother, who reported the pair to the authorities. This revelation marked the beginning of a legal saga that saw both Butler and Yates face multiple charges over their relationship.
In July 2012, Butler and Yates pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court to having sex with a relative between 2008 and 2010. Butler received a 10-month prison sentence, while Yates, aged 26 at the time, was given a 26-week suspended term. This was not Butler's first offence; he had previously received a four-month suspended sentence for incest in 2007.

The pair's connection dates back to Butler's separation from his ex-wife, Katrina, in 1990, due to allegations of violence towards her and their two children, including Nicola Yates. Yates was just seven years old when Butler left the family home in Birmingham, and she had no contact with him until her twenties, when she tracked him down online.
Within a year of their reunion, Yates had moved in with Butler without her family's knowledge, as revealed by the prosecutor. She kept the relationship secret, even after their initial convictions, and used a fake name, Andrew Bicknell, to conceal her involvement with her father from relatives.

Police investigations uncovered love letters, cards, explicit images, and texts exchanged between Butler and Yates on their mobile phones and laptops. In March 2010, Yates' stepsister, Natalie, visited their flat and found explicit photos on Yates' phone.
