Less than two weeks before Jeffrey Epstein's death in jail, his lawyers met with Manhattan federal prosecutors to discuss potential cooperation, according to newly released investigative files. An FBI document titled 'Epstein Investigation Summary & Timeline' stated that on July 29, 2019, FBI and prosecutors met with Epstein's attorneys, who 'in very general terms, discussed the possibility of a resolution of the case, and the possibility of the defendant's cooperation.'
Another document, titled 'Jeffrey Epstein Significant Case Notification,' provided further details, noting that defence counsel did not make a specific proposal or indicate the nature of any cooperation. It stated that prosecutors suggested defence counsel contact them if Epstein was prepared to accept responsibility or had a specific proposal for a resolution.
Epstein was arrested on 6 July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking minors and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking. The indictment alleged that he sexually abused dozens of underage girls from 2002 to 2005, working with employees and associates to ensure a steady supply of victims. Epstein pleaded not guilty and was denied release on house arrest.
On 23 July 2019, days before the meeting, Epstein was found unconscious in his jail cell with neck injuries, which media reports suggested may have been self-inflicted. He appeared healthy during a court appearance on 31 July, two days after the meeting. Epstein was found unconscious again on 10 August and pronounced dead at hospital; authorities ruled his death a suicide.
Epstein had previously resolved sex abuse allegations in 2008 with a controversial plea deal in Florida, avoiding federal charges by pleading guilty to state prostitution charges.
