Cyclist Killed by Driver Died Months After Wife's Passing

Brad Craven, 72, was cycling with his brother on their routine morning ride when his bike collided head-on with a car driven by Teddy Picton, 20, on Dunleavy Drive in Grangetown, Cardiff, at around 8:40am on May 17, 2025. Craven suffered serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where he never regained consciousness and died on June 20, 2025. Picton, of Cog Road, Sully, Vale of Glamorgan, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and faced sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday.

Victim's Recent Loss

Prosecutor Dan Jones told the court that Craven, a retired social worker at Llandough Hospital, had been married to his wife Janet for 40 years. She passed away three months before the collision, and her funeral had not yet taken place; Craven was in the process of planning it. The brothers met at 8:15am on the day of the crash, both experienced cyclists, and were looking forward to coffee and cake. Craven wore a fluorescent orange high-visibility jacket and had lights on his bike, making him visible.

Family Tributes

Craven's family said in a statement: "He was a confident and experienced cyclist and was with his brother on their usual morning cycle when he suffered fatal injuries and did not regain consciousness following a head-on collision. Brad, a retired social worker at Llandough Hospital, will be remembered by all as a very thoughtful and caring man who always put the welfare of others before his own." Judge Paul Hobson presided over the sentencing hearing, with Picton in the dock and Craven's family in the public gallery.
