Valeria Chomsky Apologises for 'Grave Mistake' in Epstein Relationship

Valeria Chomsky, the wife of renowned linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky, has issued a public apology for what she describes as a "grave mistake" in their association with the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. In a detailed statement released on Saturday, she acknowledged that the couple were "careless" in not thoroughly researching Epstein's background and were deceived by his manipulative persona.

Scrutiny Over Chomsky-Epstein Friendship

The relationship between Noam Chomsky, aged 97, and Epstein has come under intense scrutiny following the release of documents by the US Justice Department. These files shed light on their friendly communications, which continued even after Epstein's 2008 guilty plea for soliciting prostitution involving a minor. Valeria Chomsky revealed that the couple first met Epstein in 2015, unaware of his criminal past, as he presented himself as a philanthropist with interests in science.

In 2019, as Epstein faced sex trafficking allegations, he sought advice from Noam Chomsky on handling media scrutiny. Chomsky responded in a message, signed "Noam," suggesting that Epstein ignore the press to avoid further attacks. This correspondence, shared by Epstein with an associate, has now been made public, highlighting Chomsky's involvement. Valeria Chomsky emphasised that this advice should be understood "in context," explaining that Epstein had falsely claimed persecution, and Chomsky spoke from his own experiences with political controversies.

Newly Released Documents Reveal Details

Additional messages released by the House Oversight Committee last year show Chomsky describing regular contact with Epstein as a "most valuable experience." Other communications include Epstein sharing a phallic joke and Chomsky "fantasizing about the Caribbean island," though Valeria Chomsky clarified that the couple never visited Epstein's private island or knew about activities there. She detailed their interactions, including dinners at Epstein's New York townhouse, stays at his apartments in Paris, and visits to his ranch in New Mexico, all framed as academic gatherings.

Financial Transactions and Regrets

Valeria Chomsky addressed two financial transactions between her husband and Epstein. Epstein once sent a $20,000 check as part of a linguistic challenge developed by Chomsky. Additionally, Epstein assisted in recovering $270,000 for Chomsky after inconsistencies were discovered in his retirement resources, threatening his economic independence. She stated that Epstein likely used this as a strategy to gain greater access, but he never had control over their bank or investment accounts, and the couple had no investments with his office.

Apology and Reflection

In her statement, Valeria Chomsky expressed deep regret, noting that the couple only became fully aware of Epstein's crimes after his second arrest in July 2019, despite having read a 2018 Miami Herald exposé on his activities. She apologised on behalf of both, mentioning that Noam Chomsky, who suffered a massive stroke in 2023, shared these feelings before his health decline. She condemned Epstein's "hidden life of criminal, inhumane, and perverted acts" and acknowledged the manipulation aimed at tarnishing Chomsky's reputation by association.

This case adds to the ongoing scrutiny of prominent figures linked to Epstein, as documents continue to reveal the extent of his network and the consequences for those involved.
