British Teacher's Tragic Thailand Balcony Fall: Final Words Revealed at Inquest
A British mother who plunged from the balcony of her third-floor apartment in Thailand wrote the poignant words 'sorry' and 'I love you' on a hospital whiteboard before her tragic death. Amy Spooner, a 31-year-old teacher, spent several weeks in a Bangkok medical facility after the late-night incident in May 2023 left her with catastrophic brain injuries.
Heartbreaking Decision to Withdraw Life Support
The devoted mother-of-one to a six-year-old boy passed away the following month after slipping into an irreversible coma. Her grieving family faced the agonising choice to switch off her life support systems. An inquest into Mrs Spooner's untimely death was held at South London Coroners' Court in Croydon on Wednesday, March 25, where distressing new details emerged.
The hearing learned that Amy Spooner first moved abroad in 2016, living successively in China, Malaysia, and Thailand. She returned briefly to south London in 2017 to marry her husband, Symeon Spooner, a 36-year-old mathematics teacher, before resuming their life overseas.
Disturbing Phone Call and Mysterious Fall
Mrs Spooner's mother, Sue McDonald, testified that on May 22, 2023, she received a deeply concerning telephone call from her daughter in Thailand that was completely out of character. The victim's husband similarly reported that his wife 'wasn't behaving as her usual self' during this period.
Mrs McDonald immediately travelled to Thailand to be with her daughter. On May 29, she was informed by a security guard at the apartment complex that Amy had suffered a serious fall from height. The teacher was initially taken to a local hospital with multiple severe injuries before being transferred to Bangkok's main Siriraj Hospital for specialist neurological care.
Brief Recovery and Final Decline
Medical evidence presented at the inquest indicated that Mrs Spooner appeared to be making gradual improvements during her hospitalisation. She underwent several surgical procedures to address broken bones and was placed in an induced coma to facilitate her body's healing processes.
'At one point she sat up, raised her arms and said "I'm going to fight this,"' her mother recalled emotionally during the proceedings. However, this hopeful moment was tragically short-lived. Mrs Spooner soon complained of breathing difficulties and slipped into a coma from which medical staff could not rouse her.
Brain Death Diagnosis and Repatriation Efforts
A week later, her mother and husband received the devastating news that she was brain dead and were confronted with the heartbreaking decision regarding life support withdrawal. Amy Spooner died on June 29, 2023.
Coroner Erika Rainger noted significant evidentiary gaps in the case, stating: 'Given that Amy died in Thailand I do have significant gaps in the evidence.' An initial post-mortem examination conducted in Thailand provided limited information to the family, with the cause of death recorded as multiple injuries consistent with a fall.
Her body was repatriated to the United Kingdom, where a second examination took place at King's College Hospital on July 21, 2023. This revealed extensive injuries including:
- Scars on her left lower leg and the back of both arms
- A fractured left wrist and pelvis
- A fractured left lower leg and ankle
- A pubic bone fracture requiring surgical fixation with a nail and plate
Notably, there were no indications of a stroke, and all other physiological aspects appeared normal.
Community Support and Inquest Conclusion
Well-wishers demonstrated remarkable generosity, donating more than £11,000 to a fundraising campaign organised to help repatriate Mrs Spooner and cover funeral expenses. Organiser Sonny Nwachukwu expressed gratitude for the community's support during this difficult period.
Recording a conclusion of accidental death, Coroner Rainger summarised: 'Amy was living and working in Thailand and had been there with her husband for a number of years. Shortly before her death her mother flew out to Thailand because Amy wasn't quite her usual self. On May 29th, 2023, she fell from the balcony where she was living. She suffered serious injuries as a result of the fall.'
The coroner continued: 'She was taken to hospital in Bangkok where she remained until her death. She underwent surgery and at one point was put into an induced coma to help her body heal. She recovered to the point that she was able to communicate with her family but after several weeks she suffered some breathing difficulties and shortly after went into a final coma. Her family made the agonising decision of whether to withdraw treatment. Amy died after that treatment was withdrawn.'
