Brit Woman Faces Firing Squad in Dubai After Stabbing Death
Brooke George, a 23-year-old former John Lewis shop assistant from Gravesend, Kent, is facing the death penalty by firing squad in Dubai after being charged with murdering a 26-year-old British man she met online. The case has drawn attention from human rights groups, who claim she acted in self-defence.
Details of the Incident
George, also a TikTok influencer with 1 million followers, travelled to Dubai after meeting the man on Facebook. He allegedly arranged a photoshoot for her in the city. Her first visit was positive, describing it as “the time of my life”. However, during her second trip, she says an altercation occurred at an apartment after the pair spent an evening at Caffreys Bar in Jumeirah Village.
George alleges she was attacked and reached for a kitchen knife, acting in self-defence. She arranged a flight home with friends' help but was arrested at Dubai International Airport on June 22. She has been charged with murder and, if convicted, faces execution by firing squad.
Claims of Mistreatment
After her arrest, George claims she was denied a lawyer and forced to strip naked in front of male officers, with no female officers present. She described the experience as “deeply humiliating and distressing”, breaking down in tears when recounting it to her family. She is being held in Bur Dubai prison.
Family and Advocacy Response
In a statement through Detained in Dubai, George's mother, Thereza, said: “As Brooke's mother, I am deeply concerned for her welfare. The daughter I spoke to that night was utterly terrified. I firmly believe she was desperately trying to get home and away from whatever had happened to her.”
Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, urged authorities to treat the incident as a domestic abuse case and release George on bail pending investigation. She said: “Authorities must treat her as a domestic violence survivor while they investigate.” Stirling added: “We will be working to ensure that [George's] rights are protected, that she receives a fair trial, and that the circumstances leading to this tragedy are fully and impartially examined.”
Stirling highlighted increasing reports of women being lured to Dubai with promises of luxury lifestyles, only to face exploitation or violence. She called for George's release on bail and for the investigation to examine her allegations of being a victim of serious violence. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has been approached for comment.
