Prison Officer Receives Eight-Month Sentence for Relationship with Convicted Murderer

A female prison officer has been sentenced to eight months behind bars for engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a convicted murderer while working at Britain's most secure prison facilities. Bethany Dent-Reynolds, 27, from Forest Hill in London, exchanged sexual WhatsApp messages and phone calls with killer Kieran Robinson, Woolwich Crown Court heard during the proceedings.

Details of the Inappropriate Relationship

The court learned that Robinson and his cousin Sean Robinson are currently serving a 23-year sentence for the murder of Donnell Rhule in West Dulwich, south London, which occurred in July 2020. Dent-Reynolds first encountered Robinson while she was employed at Belmarsh Prison, but their relationship only turned romantic after she transitioned to a new role as a probation officer at HMP Brixton.

After Robinson initiated contact through social media platforms, they quickly developed a relationship. Dent-Reynolds traveled to visit the convict on multiple occasions after he was transferred to HMP Lowdham Grange. Between February and May 2024, she made several visits to the prison facility where Robinson was incarcerated.

Accessing Restricted Information

Prosecutor Sam Willis revealed during the sentencing hearing that Dent-Reynolds accessed the probation service's Delius computer system using a colleague's login credentials to examine Robinson's confidential case files. She then discussed her findings with Robinson, telling him that his co-defendants "all stuck it on you" during police interviews.

Willis told the court: "She said 'everyone had prepared statements except for you'. She went on to say 'when I was reading it I was like oh my God this is f****** ridiculous. Yeah, makes me angry, But also makes me upset angry. I don't know like, it's a mix of emotions, I just want you out'."

Evidence Presented in Court

During a search of Robinson's cell on June 12, 2024, authorities recovered a letter from Dent-Reynolds along with a diary containing her personal address, mobile phone number, and Instagram username. Subsequent examination of her mobile telephone revealed numerous WhatsApp messages exchanged between the pair, including messages of a sexual nature, personal images of both individuals, and a message from Robinson requesting a "favour."

Call recordings presented as evidence showed that on April 23, 2024, the pair discussed an incident at the prison, with Robinson remarking, "Ahh you don't even have anyone in there to get the scoop no more innit." The following day, they discussed strip searches and scans conducted within the prison system.

Legal Proceedings and Defense

Dent-Reynolds attended Lewisham Police Station on August 8, 2024, where she disclosed that she had been suspended from her position and informed about an ongoing police investigation. Officers subsequently arrested her on October 17, 2024. At Woolwich Crown Court in December of last year, she pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office.

Defense counsel Chantelle Stocks, representing Dent-Reynolds, argued that her client had previously maintained "impeccable good character" and emphasized that there was no suggestion of physical sexual contact between the pair. Stocks stated: "For the most part they exchanged sweet nothings that had minimal impact."

The defense attorney further explained that Dent-Reynolds had experienced trauma from domestic violence both during her childhood and as an adult, and was "surrounded by dysfunctional dynamics" in her personal life.

Sentencing Outcome

At Woolwich Crown Court on Friday, Dent-Reynolds received an eight-month prison sentence for her misconduct. The case highlights serious breaches of professional boundaries within the prison and probation services, particularly regarding relationships between staff members and incarcerated individuals.

The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the legal and ethical obligations facing those working within the criminal justice system, especially when handling sensitive information and maintaining appropriate professional relationships with prisoners under their supervision.
