A female prison officer has appeared in court facing serious misconduct allegations after being accused of engaging in sexual activity with an inmate at the troubled HMP Wandsworth.
Linda De Sousa Abreu, 30, from Fulham, southwest London, stands charged with misconduct in public office following the alleged incident at the Category B prison that has recently been under intense scrutiny.
Court Appearance and Charges
De Sousa Abreu appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court where the charges were formally presented. The prosecution alleges she committed misconduct in public office between April 25 and June 14 this year.
The specific charge states she "wilfully misconducted herself" by performing a sexual act in the presence of an inmate, acting in a manner that amounted to an abuse of the public's trust in the prison service.
Security Concerns at Notorious Prison
This case emerges against the backdrop of heightened security concerns at HMP Wandsworth, which gained notoriety last year when terror suspect Daniel Khalife managed to escape from the facility.
The prison, which houses approximately 1,600 inmates, has faced repeated criticism over security lapses and operational failures in recent years.
Legal Proceedings Continue
District Judge Daniel Sternberg has granted De Sousa Abreu unconditional bail until her next court appearance. The case has been transferred to Kingston Crown Court, where a plea and trial preparation hearing is scheduled for October 18.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the investigation began after authorities received information about the alleged incident, leading to the officer's suspension and subsequent charging.
Broader Implications for Prison Service
This case raises significant questions about professional boundaries and security protocols within the UK prison system. The relationship between prison staff and inmates represents a serious breach of professional conduct and potentially compromises institutional security.
The Prison Service has emphasized that such behaviour "falls far below the standards we expect" and confirmed that appropriate action has been taken against the officer involved.
