David Almond, an 80-year-old paedophile who was serving a 12-year prison sentence for historic sex crimes against four children, has died from brain cancer. Almond passed away in a hospice on September 14, 2024, while incarcerated at HMP Liverpool, as confirmed by a Prisons and Probation Ombudsman report into his death.
Conviction and Sentencing Details
Almond, from Greasby in Wirral, was jailed on February 21, 2020, after being found guilty of multiple sexual offences against four victims, all under the age of 14, during the 1980s and 1990s. The court heard how he sexually assaulted three girls and one boy, leading to his arrest in 2017 and subsequent charges with eight counts of indecent assault and four counts of indecency with a child.
Despite denying any wrongdoing, Almond was convicted after a trial and received a 12-year sentence along with a lifetime Sex Offenders Order. The severity of his crimes was underscored by the profound impact on his victims, with one describing how his actions left her in a state of perpetual suffering.
Victim Impact Statements
During the trial, a personal statement from a female victim was read aloud in court, detailing the lifelong trauma inflicted by Almond. She expressed that he had stolen her childhood spirit and subjected her to decades of psychological damage, including chronic depression, anxiety, self-loathing, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The victim stated, "I have hit rock bottom so many times, I have visited hell and purgatory for no fault of my own. He tainted my innocence in a predatory calculating manner. He groomed a child... at a time when I trusted all adults." She further explained that his abuse had led to destructive coping mechanisms and that his memory haunted her daily, affecting her thoughts, dreams, and hopes.
Legal and Health Outcomes
Almond's death from brain cancer occurred while he was still serving his prison term, highlighting the end of a case that had brought long-overdue justice for his victims. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman report provides official documentation of his passing, ensuring transparency in the circumstances surrounding his death.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the enduring consequences of child sexual abuse and the importance of legal accountability for such heinous crimes. The victims' courage in coming forward and testifying played a crucial role in securing his conviction, offering some measure of closure despite the ongoing personal struggles they face.
