The son of legendary Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner has reportedly had a significant change to his jail conditions as he awaits a crucial court hearing on murder charges.
From Suicide Watch to Solitary Confinement
Nick Reiner, 32, is no longer on suicide watch at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, according to a sheriff's source speaking to PEOPLE. The change comes just before his scheduled arraignment on Wednesday, 7th January 2026. He had initially been placed under heightened supervision and was seen wearing a blue protective jacket, believed to be a suicide-prevention vest, during his first court appearance.
Despite being removed from formal suicide watch, Nick Reiner will remain in High Observation Housing (HOH), a form of mental health housing. The source confirmed he is "still housed alone and monitored every 15 minutes" and continues to be considered as having mental health issues. He is required to wear a yellow jail-issued shirt with blue trousers and is escorted by a deputy whenever he leaves his cell.
A Troubled History and a Hollywood Tragedy
Nick Reiner was arrested soon after the bodies of his parents, Rob and Michelle Reiner, were discovered in their Brentwood mansion last month. The couple, married for 36 years, were found dead in a tragedy that sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry. Nick has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder with the special allegation of using a knife.
Multiple reports, including from the Los Angeles Times and TMZ, indicate that Nick had been diagnosed with schizophrenia prior to the killings. Sources suggest that in the month before the murders, his medication was altered by medical professionals, allegedly causing him to become "erratic and dangerous." He had also been receiving treatment at a high-end Los Angeles rehabilitation centre specialising in mental health and drug dependency, which costs approximately $70,000 per month.
The Day of the Discovery and the Path to Court
The grim discovery was made on the afternoon the Reiners had a massage appointment scheduled. When the therapist received no answer, they contacted the couple's daughter, Romy Reiner, who lives nearby. Romy arrived at the home with a housemate and, upon entering, encountered her father's body. She fled the scene, not initially realising her mother was also dead, a fact later conveyed to her by a paramedic.
Police responded immediately, with LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell confirming a comprehensive investigation was launched. Nick Reiner was taken into custody that same night. He is currently being held without bail. His upcoming arraignment on 7th January will be the next major step in the legal proceedings surrounding this devastating case.
