Eight criminals from Merseyside were jailed over the past week for a combined total of 51 years and five months. Among them were a Sur-Ron e-bike rider who killed his friend in a crash, a nurse who ignored a patient who later died by suicide, and a drug dealer found asleep in his hotel room.
Teenager jailed for causing death of friend in e-bike crash
Leon Jones, 20, of Ford Way in Woodchurch, was sentenced to five years and 10 months in a young offenders' institute after admitting causing death by dangerous driving and arson. He was involved in a head-on crash on Hoole Road in Woodchurch, Wirral, in which Spencer Crofts, 17, died. Jones, who suffered serious head injuries, gave a thumbs up to a judge as he was sentenced.
Sleeping drug dealer and pregnant street dealer jailed
Jerome Mayers, 22, of Hannan Road, was jailed for 2,045 days after admitting possession of heroin and cocaine with intent to supply. He was found asleep in his room at the Adelphi Hotel, where police discovered a makeshift drug packaging line. Sarah Dunne, 35, of Fraser Street, who was pregnant, was jailed for three-and-a-half years after pleading guilty to possession of heroin and cocaine with intent to supply and breaching a suspended sentence order.
Nurse jailed for wilful neglect of patient
Laurence Tchapong, 54, of Penroyson Close in Manchester, was jailed for four years after being found guilty of wilful neglect of a patient. She failed to carry out observations on Amy Barber, 22, at Clatterbridge Hospital, who was later found unresponsive. Tchapong had lied in her records and blamed staffing levels and her manager for her inaction.
Thug who bit off part of man's ear jailed
Kieran Scholes, 21, of Duke Street in New Brighton, was jailed for seven years after being found guilty of wounding with intent and affray. He bit part of a man's ear off during a brawl outside a convenience store, which also involved his brother and several others.
Teenager who fired gunshots in Toxteth jailed
Jama Yusuf, 19, of Eversley Street, was jailed for 13-and-a-half years in a young offenders' institute after being convicted of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of ammunition without a certificate, and two counts of criminal damage. He fired seven shots towards two men while cycling in Toxteth, with bullets also hitting a house and a parked van.
Couple jailed for smuggling cocaine worth £750,000
May Taylor, 22, of Rowan Place in Lancaster, and Daryush Yavari, 20, of Blackstock Road in Sheffield, were each jailed for six years after admitting being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of a prohibition on the importation of cocaine. They attempted to smuggle 34kg of cocaine into the UK from the Algarve, hiding it in suitcases with coffee.
