Manhunt for escaped prisoner Mahad Elmi

Police have launched a major manhunt after a prisoner escaped from a men's open prison in Buckinghamshire between Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Details of the Escape

Mahad Elmi, aged 27, is now unlawfully at large after leaving HMP Springhill, located near Grendon Underwood. Authorities believe the escape occurred overnight or in the early hours of the morning of 27 December 2025.

Thames Valley Police have issued a public appeal for information and a stark warning. Detective Sergeant Matthew French, of the Priority Crime Team, stated: "We are appealing for the help of the public to trace Mahad Elmi. If you see Elmi, do not approach him and call 999 instead."

Public Urged Not to Approach

The force has emphasised that members of the public should not attempt to engage with the fugitive under any circumstances. Instead, anyone who spots him is instructed to contact emergency services immediately.

Elmi is described as a black man, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a medium build. He has medium-length black hair, a beard, and brown eyes.

How to Report Information

For those with information about Elmi's potential whereabouts, but who do not have an immediate sighting, police have provided alternative contact methods.

You can call the non-emergency number 101 or make a report online, ensuring you quote the reference number: 43250653119.

This remains a developing situation as officers continue their search across the region.
