Husband Jailed for Life for Murder and Cover-Up of Wife's Death
Husband Jailed for Life for Murder and Cover-Up

Michael Thompson, 56, was sentenced to life imprisonment at Nottingham Crown Court on July 14, 2026, for the murder of his wife Kimberley Thompson, whom he raped and smothered before attempting to stage her death as a suicide. Judge Nirmal Shant KC ordered him to serve a minimum of 33 years before parole eligibility, calling his actions a 'concerted attempt to conceal' the crime.

Daughter's Impact Statement

The couple's daughter, Athena, delivered a tearful victim impact statement via video-link from the US, describing Thompson as a 'jealous, conniving, narcissistic villain.' She said: 'How could you do such an evil, selfish, malicious thing? How could you murder the mother of your own children? ... The day you killed my mother, you killed me too. I feel I will never be happy again.'

Athena noted that while 3-4% of children lose a parent before 18, only around 0.0004% lose a mother to murder by their father. She vowed to 'show up for her' and continue making her proud.

Years of Abuse and Control

The trial heard that Kimberley endured years of domestic abuse and controlling behaviour. Thompson monitored her movements, dictated her friendships, checked her shopping receipts, and even searched a friend's home room by room looking for a man he suspected was there. A witness testified that Kimberley feared Thompson might kill her 'in a way that he hoped he could get away with.'

Kimberley had a new boyfriend and was planning to move out, requesting approximately £65,000 as part of their divorce. On the night of the murder, Thompson watched sexual videos of his wife while 'stewing' over her plans to leave.

Staged Suicide Scene

After smothering Kimberley, Thompson gathered photos, pill packets, and alcohol bottles to create a false suicide scene. He called 999 at 5:40 am, claiming he found her dead. However, a post-mortem found only low levels of caffeine, paracetamol, and codeine in her system, with no alcohol. Friends and family noted that a Facebook post purportedly from Kimberley contained a spelling error and was not in her usual style, raising suspicion.

When the suicide theory was disproven, Thompson suggested Kimberley died from an unknown cause but declined to give evidence, instead shaking his head and making noises during the trial. He was found guilty of murder, rape, and two counts of perverting the course of justice.

Judge's Remarks

Judge Shant noted Thompson showed 'no remorse' and refused to face the family in court, calling it 'the ultimate act of cowardice and contempt.' She ordered that a bundle of victim impact statements and her sentencing remarks be sent to him so he could 'read of the devastation you have wreaked.'

Family Tributes

Kimberley's sister Dionne said: 'I want the whole world to know that Kim really was the bravest, most selfless, precious and wonderful person and she will never, ever be forgotten.' Another sister, Amanda, highlighted the devastating impact on Kimberley's children: 'Not only have they lost their Mum, they have also lost the stability and security that every child deserves.'

Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison described the abuse as 'horrific' and urged anyone in a similar situation to seek help. The case also revealed that detectives had investigated the death of Thompson's former partner, Rhonda Anderson, who was electrocuted in 2000, but the inquiry was closed due to insufficient evidence.
