A tragic industrial accident in South Houston claimed the life of a worker on Wednesday after a storage tank truck carrying 50,000 gallons of hot asphalt ruptured, burying the victim under three feet of the material. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the Martin Asphalt facility near Christy Place and Texas Street, according to city officials and the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office.
Details of the Incident
The spill engulfed part of the facility, trapping the worker beneath an estimated three feet of asphalt. A source told FOX26 that the temperature of the tar was around 210 degrees Fahrenheit (98 degrees Celsius). Emergency crews, including Houston Fire Department HAZMAT teams and local responders, arrived promptly after the rupture. They recovered the worker's body, though officials noted the process was prolonged due to the hazardous conditions.
Martin Asphalt confirmed that the deceased was an employee, but their identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Response and Investigation
Officials conducted air monitoring into Wednesday evening but assured the public that there is no danger to the surrounding community. Recovery operations have since been completed. The Pasadena Fire Marshal's Office is leading the investigation into the cause of the rupture.
Sharon Taylor, CFO of Martin Midstream Partners LP, told ABC13 that the victim's body has been recovered, but the cause of the incident remains undetermined.
