A woman in her 20s was taken to hospital after reportedly jumping from her balcony to escape a fire at a block of flats in Gateshead, sustaining injuries including a suspected broken ankle.

The blaze broke out at the Ochre Yards flats on Worsdell Drive shortly after 12.30pm on Sunday (October 25). Emergency services attended the scene on the south bank of the River Tyne, where firefighters tackled the fire and residents were evacuated from neighbouring properties as a precaution.

Emergency response and injuries

Northumbria Police confirmed the woman's injuries, which included a suspected broken ankle, are not believed to be life-threatening.
