A significant fire in Walthamstow, east London, led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents and caused major travel disruption on the Weaver London Overground line. The blaze broke out near Vallentin Road and Shernhall Street on the evening of July 12, 2026, engulfing a house, several garden sheds, and a railway embankment near Wood Street station.
Emergency Response and Evacuation
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) deployed 20 fire engines and approximately 125 firefighters to combat the flames. Thick smoke was visible for miles across the capital, prompting authorities to advise locals to keep windows and doors shut. Two rest centres were set up for evacuees, and residents on unaffected streets provided water to those forced to flee. No injuries have been reported, according to the LFB.
Local MP Stella Creasy suggested the fire may have been caused by an 'electrical fire on the train line,' while social media speculation pointed to a fallen tree on the overhead railway line. The cause remains under investigation.
Property Damage and Firefighting Efforts
Assistant Commissioner Tom Goodall of the LFB described the incident as 'significant' and thanked firefighters for their work in 'hot and arduous conditions.' He confirmed that one house was alight, a second home suffered damage to a rear extension, and gardens of around 30 properties were affected. Crews prevented the fire from spreading further.
Goodall added: 'We have worked with the local authority and our other partners to set up two rest centres for residents who have been evacuated from their homes. They are all being supported at this time and we are hopeful that the majority of them will be able to return home tonight.'
Travel Disruption on Weaver Line
The blaze was under control by 10:30 pm on July 12, but the Weaver line remains suspended between Chingford and Hackney Downs for urgent track repairs. Transport for London expects the closure to last all day on July 13. Passengers on stopped trains were supported by LFB, Transport for London, and British Transport Police, and all have now left the railway.
The LFB will retain a presence at the scene through the night to fully extinguish the fire. Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
