Three teenagers have been formally charged with murder following the death of a 49-year-old man described by his grieving family as having a "heart of gold".
Discovery and Arrests
Cleveland Police were called to a property on Egglescliffe Close in the Hardwick area of Stockton at approximately 6:50pm on Saturday, 10 January 2026. Officers discovered the body of David Cuthbert at the scene. Following a swift investigation, three young men were arrested on suspicion of murder that same day.
The suspects, identified as 18-year-old Layton Lightfoot from Middlesbrough, 19-year-old Charlie Wilcock of no fixed address, and 18-year-old Jesse Reaney from Hartlepool, were questioned in custody. After two days of enquiries, detectives from the force's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team (HMET) authorised charges.
Court Proceedings and Police Statement
All three accused were charged with murder on Monday, 12 January. They have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, 13 January 2026.
In an official statement, Cleveland Police confirmed the charges relate directly to the incident on Egglescliffe Close where Mr Cuthbert was found deceased. The force also emphasised that the victim's family continues to receive support from specially trained officers within the investigation team.
A Family's Heartbreaking Tribute
The family of David Cuthbert released an emotional tribute, painting a picture of a beloved and charismatic man. They described him as a "kind, loving, fun man with a heart of gold" who was always smiling and could light up a room.
"David was loved by so many and would do anything for anyone," the family's statement continued. "We as a family are so grateful for the love and support we are receiving. And even more so thankful to Cleveland Police. All our hearts are broken. We all love you so much David."
The investigation remains ongoing as the case progresses through the judicial system.
