The body of a teenage boy who was seen entering a lake in Leicestershire on the hottest day of the year has been recovered, police confirmed.
Incident at Meynell Lake
Officers were called just after 1:30 pm on Wednesday to Meynell Lake in Fosse Way, Syston, following reports of a teenage boy entering the water. Leicestershire Police, along with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service, attended the scene. Police divers were also deployed to search the lake.
On Thursday, Leicestershire Police confirmed that a person had been recovered from the water. The body is believed to be that of the teenage boy, although formal identification has not yet taken place. The boy's family has been informed and is being supported by specially trained officers.
Extreme Heat Context
The incident occurred as the UK experienced record-breaking temperatures, with the hottest day of the year recorded on Wednesday. The Met Office had issued an extreme heat warning for parts of the country, including Leicestershire. The temperature in the region reached 32°C (89.6°F), prompting warnings about the dangers of swimming in open water.
According to the Royal Life Saving Society UK, around 400 people drown in the UK every year, and many of these tragedies occur in open water during hot weather. Cold water shock, even on hot days, can cause involuntary gasping, hyperventilation, and muscle cramps, leading to drowning.
Police Investigation
Leicestershire Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boy's death. They are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the boy enter the lake or who have any information about the incident to come forward. A cordon remains in place around the lake as inquiries continue.
Chief Inspector Steve King said: "This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the boy's family and friends at this difficult time. We are working to establish exactly what happened, and we urge anyone with information to contact us."
The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
