Teenager dies at notorious Welsh waterfalls

Sean Kanyoza, a 19-year-old student from Swindon, died after getting into difficulty in the water at the Pontneddfechan waterfalls in Bannau Brycheiniog on Saturday, June 27. The area is one of the most popular waterfall hiking destinations in Wales, drawing over 300,000 visitors annually, but has seen multiple water-related tragedies in recent years due to deceptive currents and cold water temperatures.

Incident details

Kanyoza had traveled to the falls with friends for a day out. According to an inquest opened at Pontypridd coroners' court on Thursday, July 9, he entered the water beneath the waterfall at Ystradfellte and was pulled under by a harsh current, failing to resurface. Emergency services—including police, ambulance, firefighters, mountain rescue teams, and the air ambulance—responded, but Kanyoza could not be saved.

Tributes and identification

Kanyoza was formally identified by a friend on the day of his death. A GoFundMe fundraiser described him as a "true free spirit with a heart of gold." The full tribute read: "Sean was one of those rare people who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was a true free spirit with a heart of gold, an infectious smile, and a positivity that could brighten even the darkest day. No matter what life threw at him, Sean always found a reason to smile, laugh, and make those around him feel welcome. His kindness, generosity, and genuine love for people made him someone you could never forget."

The cause of death was listed as pending further investigation by histology and toxicology. Coroner Rachel Knight expressed condolences to Kanyoza's family and adjourned the inquest for a full hearing at a later date.

Police statement

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: "We received a call for assistance at approximately 2.15pm on Saturday following a concern for the welfare of a 19-year-old man who had entered the water at Ystradfellte waterfalls. Officers attended, along with colleagues from the fire and rescue service and ambulance. Despite the efforts of all involved, a 19-year-old man sadly died at the scene. Next of kin have been informed, as well as HM Coroner."

History of tragedies

Several people have died in recent years at the Pontneddfechan waterfalls, an area known as "waterfall country" within Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. Deaths have resulted from drowning, strong undercurrents, and jumping into deep pools. The location sees more than 300,000 visitors each year, and the last five years alone have witnessed multiple water-related fatalities due to the deceptive nature of the currents and cold water temperatures.
