Teen Dies in River Wye During DofE Expedition

An 18-year-old sixth form student from London died after entering the River Wye in Powys during a Duke of Edinburgh expedition. Umar Dumbuya was reported missing on June 30, prompting a search by police, fire, and mountain rescue teams. His body was later recovered and identified by Dyfed-Powys Police.

School and Family Tributes

Leyton Sixth Form College described Umar as a "much-loved student" who would be remembered for his kindness and warmth. The college said: "Umar will be remembered for his kindness, warmth, and the positive impact he had on his family, friends, classmates, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing them." His family called him a "loving" son, brother, and grandson, adding there are "no words" to express their grief.

Fundraiser Launched

The college set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses and other costs. In a statement, they said: "Every donation, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference. If you are unable to contribute financially, please consider sharing this fundraiser and keeping the family in your thoughts and prayers."

DofE Statement

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award confirmed on July 1 that Umar was participating in a DofE expedition when the incident occurred. A DofE spokesman said: "We are deeply saddened to confirm that a young person has drowned while on a DofE expedition in Powys, Wales. Our thoughts are with the young person's family together with all those who were taking part. We will do everything we can to support them at this difficult time." They added they are liaising with the college and authorities to understand how the tragedy happened.
