Greater Manchester Police have launched a major investigation after a 19-year-old man fell to his death from a multi-storey car park in a suspected social media 'stunt' that was being filmed by friends.
The victim, named locally as Dezi Freeman, tragically plunged from the car park on Sunday night. Emergency services rushed to the scene on Dantzic Street but despite their efforts, the young man was pronounced dead.
Shockingly, it is understood that a group of the teenager's friends were present and recording the ill-fated stunt on their mobile phones at the time of the incident. Police are now examining this footage as a key part of their investigation to piece together the exact circumstances that led to the tragedy.
A Community in Mourning
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community. A heartfelt tribute, featuring flowers and a poignant note, has been left at the scene. The note, addressed to 'Dezi', read: "You will be missed by many. I hope you are at peace, my friend. Love you, bro."
Forensic officers were seen scouring the top level of the car park for evidence throughout Monday, a grim reminder of the devastating event that unfolded hours earlier.
Police Appeal for Information
Detectives are treating the death as unexplained but are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the fall. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police stated: "We were called at around 10:35 pm on Sunday to a report of a concern for welfare. A man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing."
The force is urging any witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those with video footage, to come forward to assist their enquiries. This tragic event serves as a horrifying warning about the potential real-world consequences of pursuing dangerous viral trends for online clout.
