A Colorado art teacher's decision to film himself using his phone's selfie mode during a violent rampage has provided chilling evidence in a case that has horrified the local community.
William James Kohnke, 35, allegedly recorded his own actions during a stabbing spree that left one man dead and two others seriously injured in Westminster. The disturbing footage shows Kohnke walking through neighbourhood streets while making alarming statements about his intentions.
The Night of Terror
According to court documents, the incident began when Kohnke allegedly attacked his roommate with a knife inside their shared home. The violence then spilled out into the quiet residential streets, where he continued his rampage.
Prosecutors state that Kohnke approached 62-year-old Steven Power, who was simply walking his dog, and stabbed him multiple times. Power tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Selfie Mode Evidence
Perhaps most disturbingly, Kohnke allegedly recorded portions of the attack using his phone's front-facing camera. In the footage, he can be heard making statements like "I'm going to kill people" and "I'm going to stab people" while walking through the neighbourhood.
The video evidence provides unprecedented insight into the perpetrator's state of mind during the violent episodes, showing him calmly documenting his actions as they unfolded.
Multiple Victims
In addition to the fatal stabbing of Steven Power, two other victims survived serious injuries. Kohnke's roommate sustained multiple stab wounds but managed to survive the attack.
Another neighbour, who came outside to investigate the commotion, also became a victim when Kohnke allegedly turned his violence toward them.
Legal Proceedings
Kohnke now faces serious charges including first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. The case continues to develop as prosecutors examine the unusual video evidence.
