A 37-year-old British man has died following a brawl on a popular party strip in Tenerife, with a 23-year-old British man arrested and remanded in custody in connection with the incident.
The altercation occurred in the early hours of Thursday in Las Veronicas, a well-known nightlife area in Playa de las Americas, southern Tenerife. The victim, who has not been named, died at the scene.
The 23-year-old suspect appeared before a judge at the Court of First Instance of Arona on Friday. He has not been formally charged, as is standard in Spain, but is under official investigation for homicide. The judge ordered his provisional detention without bail.
A court official confirmed the suspect's detention, stating: "After taking a statement, the magistrate ordered the suspect's provisional detention, without bail, while he continues to investigate him for the crime of homicide." A secrecy order has been placed on the case by the investigating judge, limiting the information that can be disclosed.
Police have confirmed the nationalities of both the deceased and the arrested man as British. The suspect's identity has not been released under Spanish law, which typically withholds names until a public trial.
