A 30-year-old man from Sunderland has been jailed after leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen BMW, reaching speeds of up to 100mph.
Dean Davison, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 16 months in prison at Newcastle Crown Court after admitting to charges of dangerous driving, driving without a licence, and handling stolen goods.
The incident occurred on 10 February when Northumbria Police spotted the stolen black BMW 1 Series in the Sunderland area. Davison attempted to evade officers, driving recklessly through residential streets and onto the A19, where he reached dangerous speeds.
Prosecutors described how Davison weaved between traffic, ignored red lights, and narrowly avoided collisions with other vehicles. The pursuit ended when he abandoned the car and attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly apprehended by officers.
In addition to his prison sentence, Davison was banned from driving for three years and eight months.
Detective Constable Paul Evans of Northumbria Police praised the officers involved, stating: "This was an incredibly reckless act that put innocent lives at risk. The sentence reflects the seriousness of Davison's actions."
