Specialist boat deployed in search for missing fishermen

A specialist boat is set to be deployed as the search continues for two fishermen missing after their boat disappeared off the Isle of Lewis, following the discovery of their crewmate's body two weeks ago.

The FV Kilda went missing on Tuesday, October 13, near the Port of Ness off the north coast of the island in the Outer Hebrides. The body of 49-year-old Douglas Craigie was recovered from the water the following day. His crewmates, Norman 'Tam' Murray, 40, and Murdo Morrison, 23, have not yet been located and are being treated as missing.

Search to resume with NLV Pharos

The search for both men and their vessel is continuing from Friday, October 30, with the Northern Lighthouse Board vessel NLV Pharos due to be launched to the area. This will form part of the Marine Accident Investigation Branch's investigation.

Inspector Neil Taylor said: "Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic incident."

"We will continue to work with partners, including the MAIB, Maritime and Coastguard Agency and local maritime experts, and are extremely grateful for partners' resources, which are dedicated to this operation."

Recovered items and halted ROV operations

Specialist officers from Police Scotland's Dive and Marine Unit have confirmed that items from the boat have been recovered during searches in the area. Police also used a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to scour the area close to the Port of Ness, but operations were halted due to "sea conditions and anchoring challenges".

Inspector Taylor added: "It is imperative we get answers for everyone involved and please be assured our efforts are continuing."

"We would urge people not to put themselves at any risk. Please do not attempt to carry out searches in areas which put you at risk of harm."

Community support and fundraiser

The families continue to ask for their privacy to be respected. Earlier this week, a fundraiser was set up by The Western Isles Fishermen's Association to help the loved ones of the men, who left behind young children, and has so far raised almost £240,000.

Anyone with concerns or information is asked to call 101 quoting reference 3575 of 13 October.
