Search for missing Lewis fishermen resumes after conditions improve

Police have resumed the search for two missing Isle of Lewis fishermen, three days after sea conditions forced a pause in operations. The focus is expected to continue on a specific area of the coast within the Marine Accident Investigation Branch's (MAIB) exclusion zone.

Norman Murray, 40, known as Tam, and Murdo Morrison, 23, remain unaccounted for after the FV Kilda disappeared on Tuesday, October 13. The body of crewmate Douglas Craigie was recovered at around 2.45am on Wednesday, October 14. The vessel was reported overdue on Tuesday, but efforts to trace it and the two missing fishermen have so far been unsuccessful.

Search Operations Resume

Specialist officers from Police Scotland's Marine and Dive Unit, along with partner organisations, are carrying out further enquiries in the area. Previously, they deployed a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to search the waters off the north coast of Lewis, close to the Port of Ness. Operations were halted on Saturday, October 18 due to "sea conditions and anchoring challenges."

Inspector Neil Taylor, local area Inspector for the Western Isles, said: "Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic incident. We understand how distressing this must be for all involved and I want to assure everyone that we are doing everything we can to get answers for those affected. This is a complex operation and we would ask that officers and specialists are given the time and space to carry out their enquiries."

Appeal to the Community

The MAIB exclusion zone remains in place for divers and vessels in the area between the Butt of Lewis and Port of Ness. Inspector Taylor added: "We know the local community are keen to help in any way they can. However, we urge people not to put themselves at any risk. Please do not attempt to carry out searches in areas which put you at risk of harm."

He also appealed for information, saying: "If you believe you may have any information which could assist emergency services then please call 101 quoting reference 3575 of 13 October. Officers remain in the Port of Ness area and if you have any concerns or information then I would urge you to speak to them."

Fundraiser for Families

Earlier this week, a fundraiser was set up by The Western Isles Fishermen's Association to help the families of the men, who left behind young children. It has so far raised almost £60,000. The families continue to ask for their privacy to be respected.
