Record-breaking heatwave context

The incident occurred as the UK experienced a record-breaking June heatwave. The temperature reached 36.1°C in Hampshire, smashing the previous June record of 35.6°C set in 1976. The Met Office issued red weather warnings for extreme heat, with "exceptionally high temperatures continuing to rise."

At least 1,000 schools were forced to close due to the heat. Police have been called to multiple incidents involving young people entering open water during the heatwave, with at least 17 people having died after getting into trouble in open water.

Public appeal and safety advice

Authorities urge the public to avoid the Beeston Weir area while the search continues. The incident highlights the dangers of swimming in open water during hot weather, especially in weirs and rivers with strong currents.
