Bedfordshire police have shot and killed a man in his 40s after he barricaded himself inside a property in Bedford overnight, presenting a weapon before officers fired.
Incident Details
Officers were called to reports of vehicles being damaged on Aylesbury Road at approximately 10:40 pm on Monday. Upon arrival, they found a man who had blockaded himself inside a home and was making threats.
Armed officers, police negotiators, and other emergency services attended the scene. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes as a precaution.
Police Response
Bedfordshire police stated that despite sustained efforts over several hours to engage with the man and bring the incident to a safe resolution, he presented a weapon shortly after 9:30 am on Tuesday, prompting officers to fire.
The man, who has not yet been named, received immediate advanced first aid at the scene but was pronounced dead just before 10:30 am. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Investigation
Bedfordshire police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has launched an investigation. A pathologist will conduct a postmortem examination to determine the cause of death, and the Bedfordshire coroner has been informed.
A force spokesperson said: 'A man has died after being shot by armed police in Bedford today. Officers were called to reports of vehicles being damaged in Aylesbury Road, Bedford, shortly after 10:40 pm yesterday. They attended and found a man aged in his 40s who had barricaded himself inside a property and was making threats.'
The spokesperson added: 'Specialist armed officers attended the scene, supported by police negotiators and other emergency services. Despite sustained efforts over a number of hours to engage with the man and bring the incident to a safe resolution, shortly after 9:30 am, he presented a weapon before police fired.'
Residents who were evacuated are being supported to return to their homes, and police believe there is no ongoing risk to the public.
